Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, has made quite a few Moms MAD this weekend. What would the Secretary of Education say that would upset so many parents? Well, it was about Common Core. And those who do not approve of it.
To quote Arne Duncan, “It’s fascinating to me that some of the pushback is coming from, sort of, white suburban moms who – all of a sudden – their child isn’t as brilliant as they thought they were and their school isn’t quite as good as they thought they were, and that’s pretty scary. You’ve bet your house and where you live and everything on, “My child’s going to be prepared.” That can be a punch in the gut.”
I’m so glad the Secretary of Education took time out of his busy schedule to insult me. I am, after all, a white suburban mom. And yes, my children are all brilliant. My oldest is in second grade but has participated in VOLUNTARY Science Fairs (held by the PTA, not the school itself) the last two years. His first grade project? “Are Birds Really Angry” because he enjoyed “Angry Birds” on the Kindle. He poured over The National Audubon Society of Birds book that he asked me to buy. He read about nesting, mating and migration of birds…in FIRST GRADE.
I ran for School Board this last election. Rather than having yard signs and spending money, I asked that any money to my campaign be donated to the PTO. Because it wasn’t about me, it was about the kids. I didn’t need my name on every yard sign and street corner. I didn’t win a seat on the School Board, but I did not come in last. I tried to use social media and endorsements from both Conservative AND Liberals who knew me and my intentions. They knew that I had my children and the children in the school districts best interest in mind.
It’s not about Conservative or Liberal. It’s not about Tea Party and Obama supporters. It’s about our kids. My children will not, I repeat, WILL NOT have their creativity stripped from them, be brought down to the lowest common denominator and will NOT become a carbon copy, mindless, fill in the circles being. They are MY children. They do not belong to the Government. They are their own being. They deserve to learn at their own pace, not a pace mandated by the bureaucrats.
Finally, Secretary Duncan (who can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org)– feel free to email him, thank you for judging me and my children. I am so glad that my hard working tax dollars pay for you to insult me and other free thinking “white suburban moms” who honestly, only have our children’s best interest in mind.
A Facebook group, Moms Against Duncan (or MAD) has grown to over 1700 members in the last few days. I guess parents who are against common core do not appreciate someone who is paid by their tax dollars insulting them or their children.
Education should be locally controlled. But what do I know? I’m just a white suburban mom of 4 under the age of 8. I’m not as invested in my children’s education as say, Bill Gates.
