Captain Terry Hestilow is a retired Army officer with combat service in Vietnam and Afghanistan. A “mustang” officer, Captain Hestilow’s military career spanned 43 years of service from the ranks of an enlisted soldier to a staff sergeant to a captain of infantry. A two time graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington, Hestilow also attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Never a military chaplain, Hestilow took a break from 1993 to 2002 to serve as the pastor of Baptist churches in Colorado and Louisiana, he was charter president of the National Military Science Christian Student Ministry, a denominational leader serving senior adult ministries and conference leader at the Southern Baptist Convention’s annual senior adult conference in Glorieta, New Mexico. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Hestilow returned to military service and was reassigned to the United States Army Civil Affairs Psychological Operations Command (Airborne) in 2006. At Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Hestilow was trained to lead a Civil Affairs team attached to the 82nd Airborne Division in Farah Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, 2007-2008. While deployed to Afghanistan Captain Hestilow, although not a military chaplain, was given the responsibilities of leading Christian worship and special Christian observances at “Heaven’s Outpost Chapel” on Forward Operating Base, Farah. Captain Hestilow speaks and writes in areas of ethics, theology, and history.
